4 medium carrots, thinly sliced
3 medium potatoes, diced
2 medium onions, sliced
2 teaspoons salt
2 – 3 pounds/ 0.9 – 1.4 kg lean beef for stew (1 inch/ 2.5 cm cubes)
Flour and salt
Cooking oil
1 ½ cups canned beef broth, consommé or part broth and part dry red wine
3 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
3 tablespoons flour
Cooking steps
- Layer vegetables in an electric cooker, then sprinkle with salt.
- Coat beef with a mixture of flour and salt.
- Brown in oil in a large pan, spoon beef cubes onto vegetables.
- Add broth to pan, stirring to loosen browned particles.
- Pour broth into your slow cooker.
- Cover and cook on Low 8 -10 hours.
- To thicken gravy, make a paste of butter and flour. Add to stew liquid, stir to blend.
- Cover and cook on High 1 hour.
