Ingredients

  • 3 lbs/ 1. 5 kg lean mince beef

  • 2 tsp / 30 ml salt

  • ¼ tsp / 1 ml pepper

  • 2 tbsp / 30 ml vegetable oil

  • 3 onions, peeled and chopped

  • 1 cup chopped celery

  • 1 cup regular barley

  • 2 tbsp / 30 ml chilli powder

  • 1 litre / quart tomato juice

  • 1 cup water

Cooking steps

  • Mix beef with salt and pepper.
  • Heat the oil in a large heavy saucepot.
  • Add the beef and onion, separating the meat into pieces; cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Skim off any excess fat, if desired.
  • Place the mixture into a slow cooker.
  • Stir in celery, barley, chili powder, tomato juice, and water.
  • Cover and cook on Low for 12-14 hours.
  • Serve with crusty bread.
