Half the fun of making smoothies is adding your own twist!

The recipe above makes a great wheatgrass smoothie in it’s own right, but here are a few ideas if you’re feeling more adventurous:

  • 1 green apple, cored and chopped – Adds a touch of sweetness and a crisp, refreshing flavour.
  • A squeeze of lemon juice – Brightens up the smoothie with a zesty kick!
  • A small piece of ginger, peeled and chopped – Adds a spicy note and boosts the immune system.
  • 1/2 cucumber, peeled and chopped – Adds hydration and a mild, refreshing taste.
  • A handful of fresh mint leaves – For a cool, refreshing twist.
  • A dash of turmeric – For a warm, earthy flavour with anti-inflammatory benefits (and allegedly anti-cancer benefits!).
  • Chunks of frozen pineapple or mango – This gives a burst of sweetness and tropical vibes, man!
  • Half an avocado – For a smooth and creamy texture packed with healthy fats.
  • A teaspoon of honey (or manuka honey) – Natural sweetness, plus the wonderful benefits of manuka. Or you can use pitted dates.

Can you enjoy a wheatgrass smoothie with your dog?

I love sharing my food with my dog, and wheatgrass on it’s own is both safe and beneficial for them!

You should always feed your dog primarily a meat-based diet, but as a general rule you can add 10% of species appropriate foods to boost their health and wellbeing.

However, if sharing a wheatgrass smoothie with your dog, be aware of the following considerations:

  • The Internet tells us garlic is bad for dogs, but trawling through the research it appears only in excess (multiple cloves). When I give my dog garlic it is always in a small amount, but it’s worth being careful if you share your wheatgrass smoothie with your dog.

Ideal recipe: Keep the ingredients limited to the base ingredients in the recipe above, limiting the garlic, and perhaps adding some cucumber or a touch of apple – all these ingredients are dog-friendly!

Always introduce new foods gradually and in small amounts to ensure your dog doesn’t have any adverse reactions.

This way, both you and your dog can enjoy a healthy and refreshing treat together!
